Holiday home maintenance isn’t on everyone’s holiday to-do checklist—but it should be. You’ve probably thought about how to make the perfect Thanksgiving turkey. You’re considering where to hang twinkling lights, which holiday treats to bake, and making the switch from the AC to the heater. But your appliances need attention as well.

You need all your appliances in perfect working order to have the ideal holiday season. So don’t let a faulty appliance ruin the holidays. Include these three items on your holiday checklist to ensure you have a worry-free and magical season.

Test Everything

Don’t set yourself up for a holiday fiasco by failing to check your appliances. According to data on more than 381,000 appliances collected by Consumer Reports, more than 6 percent of people reported problems with their gas burners, ovens, or cooktop elements. In some cases, the gas ignition was broken, or the oven wouldn’t heat up. Among dishwasher owners, 11 percent said their appliances weren’t cleaning correctly.

So a few weeks before the big day, do some holiday home maintenance. Use all the appliances you’ll need for your holiday meal, and then you’ll know if you need to fix anything. Throw in a batch of cookies, bake a casserole—anything that gets your oven up to temp and needs a timer. Then put all your dishes in the dishwasher to make sure it’s also performing as expected.

Using and testing your appliances in advance gives you time to schedule maintenance or repairs before the holidays.

Do Some Deep Cleaning

Holiday deep cleaning is more than scrubbing baseboards. So before you finish cleaning everything, spend some time on your most-used appliances. Take some time before the holidays and clean what you can. On your fridge, clean the coils on the back or bottom of the appliance. A vacuum and brush attachment will do the job. For your dishwasher, put one cup of white vinegar in an open container on the bottom of the empty dishwasher. The vinegar will break down the grime, including food, grease, and soap scum. Taking these few extra steps in your cleaning regime will make the holidays more stress-free.
